Puerto Rico, an island only 111 miles long by 39 miles wide (185 by 63 kilometers), is about three times the size of the state of Rhode Island . Despite its relatively small size , it is marked by great diversity and contrast in its landscape, its people , its vegetation , and its productive activities . The flatness and tropical heat of the coastal lowlands is very different from the cool and rugged hills of the interior. The sparsely populated dense forest of the interiorÂ’s highlands contrasts with the crowded cities of the north coast. The islandÂ’s climate is tropical, but there are variations within this broad definition. The north coast and the mountainous interior are rainy, but the southern lowlands relatively dry.
